Pet First Aid & CPR: How We Keep Your Pets Safe

Certified. Prepared. Peace of Mind.

At Pet Sitting 4 Comfort® (PS4C), your pet’s safety is our top priority—especially in emergencies. We’re certified in PetTech® CPR & First Aid, trained in Fear Free® Handling, and follow industry best practices from PSI, and NAPPS.

What Counts as a Pet Emergency?

Recognizing the signs can save lives. We’re trained to spot:

Vital Signs to Monitor

  • Heart Rate: 60–140 bpm (dogs), 140–250 bpm (cats)

  • Temperature: 100.4°F–102.5°F

  • Breathing: 10–30 breaths/min (dogs), 20–30/min (cats)

  • Gums: Pink is healthy. Pale, yellow, or blue? That’s a red flag.

  • Capillary Refill Time: 1.5–2 seconds

Life-Threatening Emergencies

  • Not breathing or unresponsive

  • Seizures over 5 minutes or repeated episodes

  • Choking or blocked airway

  • Severe bleeding or trauma

  • Poison ingestion or toxic exposure

Urgent But Not Life-Threatening

  • Limping, vomiting, or diarrhea with behavior changes

  • Heatstroke or hypothermia

  • Allergic reactions or insect stings

Emergency Response Protocols

We prioritize safety—yours and the pet’s—before delivering care.

CPR (Per PetTech® Protocols):

  1. Ensure area is safe. Approach calmly.

  2. Check responsiveness (name call, gentle tap).

  3. Open airway. Remove visible obstructions.

  4. Rescue breaths: Every 4–6 sec (dogs), 3–5 sec (cats).

  5. Chest compressions: 30 compressions to 2 breaths

    • Use fingers for small pets, hands for larger dogs

  6. Repeat until the pet revives or help arrives

First Aid for Common Emergencies:

  • Bleeding: Apply firm pressure for 3+ minutes. Don’t remove embedded objects.

  • Choking: Tilt head downward, give back blows. Begin CPR if unresponsive.

  • Heatstroke: Move to shade, apply cool (not cold) towels. Stop cooling at 103°F.

  • Poisoning: Contact ASPCA (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661). Do not induce vomiting unless instructed.

  • Seizures: Clear space, time the seizure, comfort afterward. Transport if over 5 minutes.
