Arlington County has confirmed two recent rabies cases involving foxes, including one near N. Ohio Street and 14th Street North. This alert is an important reminder for all pet owners to stay aware and take precautions. Whether you're in Ballston, Clarendon, Rosslyn, or other local neighborhoods, understanding the risks and how to respond is essential to keeping your pets safe.
What Happened
The Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) issued an alert after two foxes tested positive for rabies. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that spreads through the saliva of infected animals, often via bites or scratches. Infected wildlife may show unusual behavior, such as aggression, confusion, or fearlessness around humans.

How to Protect Your Pets
1. Supervise All Outdoor TimeKeep pets leashed and within your sight during walks or yard time, even if your yard is fenced.
2. Check Your Yard Before Letting Pets OutsideLook for signs of wildlife activity—especially early in the morning or after dark.
3. Confirm Rabies Vaccinations Are Up to DateRabies vaccinations are required by law and protect both your pet and public health. Contact your veterinarian to verify your pet’s vaccine status.
4. Report Unusual Wildlife BehaviorCall Arlington Animal Control at 703-931-9241 if you notice:
Sick or injured wild animals
Daytime activity from nocturnal species
Aggressive, confused, or fearless behavior in animals
Do not approach the animal—let professionals handle the situation.
Signs of Rabies in Wildlife
Sudden aggression or unprovoked attacks
Disorientation or staggering movements
Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
Approaching humans or pets without hesitation
