Losing a beloved pet can be one of the most painful moments in a pet parent’s life. Whether the loss is recent or approaching, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed by grief.

At Pet Sitting 4 Comfort® (PS4C), we’ve supported families through all stages of their pets’ lives. In response to what many of our long-time clients have experienced, we’ve launched our new Pet Loss & Grief Support page—a compassionate space for guidance, remembrance, and healing.

Why Grief Support Matters

According to the AVMA and Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement (APLB), grieving a pet can carry the same emotional weight as losing a family member.

Grief may show up as sadness, guilt, anger, or even relief—and every experience is valid.

Our goal is to help pet parents feel supported, understood, and empowered to mourn in their own way.

What You’ll Find on Our Grief Support Page

1. Where to Begin

Grief is deeply personal. To help you start processing, we share gentle suggestions such as:

  • Giving yourself time and permission to grieve

  • Reaching out to others who understand

  • Creating a simple tribute or space for reflection

2. Local Support in Northern Virginia

Through our community support with AWLA Arlington, we highlight:

  • Grief support tools

  • Tribute donation options in your pet’s name

  • Guidance from compassionate professionals

In honor of PS4C client pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge, we donate to AWLA as a tribute to their life and memory.

3. Trusted National Resources

We’ve gathered links to widely respected organizations, including:

4. Memorial Ideas & Keepsakes

There’s no one way to honor your pet’s life. Some meaningful ideas include:

  • Planting a tree or flower in their memory

  • Donating pet food or supplies to a shelter

  • Assembling a photo album or scrapbook

  • Commissioning artwork or a keepsake

  • Writing a letter to your pet or sharing memories with loved ones

PS4C clients are invited to submit a photo and brief tribute to our private memorial archive if they wish.

5. Helping Children Through Loss

Children grieve differently than adults. We provide suggestions such as:

  • Creating drawings, letters, or memory boxes

  • Reassuring them that their emotions are okay

  • Answering their questions honestly and gently

Built on Compassion & Industry Standards

Our page reflects the guidance of:

  • PSI (Pet Sitters International)

  • NAPPS (National Association of Professional Pet Sitters)

  • Fear Free® frameworks

  • AVMA standards for grief support and veterinary care

These resources support emotional wellness and reinforce the importance of validating grief across the entire family.

You're Not Alone

Grief doesn’t have an expiration date. Whether it’s been a week or a year, the bond you shared with your pet deserves to be honored.

If you’d like to share a memory, speak your pet’s name, or ask a question—we’re here for you.
