Halloween costumes can be adorable, but does your pet enjoy wearing one?

Some dogs and cats tolerate costumes. Others find them stressful.

Your pet's comfort comes first.

Here are seven simple tips for a safer Halloween.

1. Introduce Costumes Slowly

Let your pet sniff and explore the costume.

Offer treats and practice short sessions.

Never force your pet to dress up.

2. Choose a Comfortable Fit

Make sure your pet can move, breathe, see, hear, and use the bathroom normally.

Avoid tight straps, masks, and loose pieces.

Never leave a costumed pet unattended.

3. Watch for Stress

Remove the costume if your pet shows:

  • Freezing or trembling

  • Tucked tail or flattened ears

  • Excessive panting

  • Pawing at the costume

  • Hiding or trying to escape

Remember: A cute photo isn't worth your pet's discomfort.

4. Prepare for Trick-or-Treaters

Doorbells and unfamiliar visitors can frighten pets.

Provide a quiet room with familiar bedding and toys.

Keep pets away from busy entrances.

Tip: Secure doors and check ID tags to prevent escapes.

5. Keep Candy Out of Reach

Halloween treats can be dangerous.

Watch for:

  • Chocolate: Toxic to dogs and cats.

  • Xylitol: Extremely dangerous for dogs.

  • Candy wrappers: Choking or blockage risks.

Emergency: If your pet eats something potentially toxic, contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435. Fees may apply.

6. Secure Decorations

Keep pets away from candles, electrical cords, glow sticks, ribbons, and small decorations.

Tip: Use battery-operated candles instead of open flames.

7. Plan Safer Walks

Busy sidewalks and unfamiliar costumes can frighten dogs.

Use a secure leash, reflective gear, and quieter routes.

Walk before peak trick-or-treating hours when possible.

No Costume? No Problem!

Your pet can celebrate without dressing up.

Try a festive toy, pet-safe treat, or comfortable bandana.

Let your pet's comfort guide the celebration.
