Shorter Days & Pet Safety: Staying Visible on Evening Walks

Fall season means earlier sunsets and more walks in low light.
A few simple changes can help make evening walks easier to manage.

Make Both Ends of the Leash Visible
Our PS4C pet care team uses Proviz reflective gear during darker walks.
For people:
Reflective jacket or vest • Reflective trousers • Clip-on light • Flashlight or headlamp
For dogs:
Reflective coat or vest • Reflective leash • Clip-on safety light
Make sure your dog’s gear fits comfortably and does not interfere with their leash, harness, or movement.
Be Careful at Crossings
At intersections, driveways, and parking lots:
Slow down • Watch for turning vehicles • Look for bikes and scooters • Keep your dog close
Do not assume others can see you.
Choose Well-Lit Routes
When possible, look for:
Good lighting • Clear sidewalks • Familiar crossings • Fewer obstacles
Familiar routes may also help dogs who are easily startled.
Watch the Ground
Low light and fallen leaves can hide:
Trash • Food scraps • Broken glass • Standing water • Uneven pavement
A light can help you spot hazards sooner.
Follow Your Dog’s Comfort Level
Not every dog enjoys nighttime walks.
Watch their body language and adjust the:
Route • Pace • Duration
Visibility matters, but comfort does too.
Quick Evening Walk Check
Before heading out:
Leash secured • Light charged • Route planned
